Welcome

A lot of people will have heard about edibles, many will have tried them, but who has actually taken the time to make them?

In this section, I will explore the fundamentals of cooking with medical cannabis, some great recipes for meals, snacks, and treats, including sweets!

Before you begin...

Cooking with medical CANNABIS: the basics

Before you can do anything with food and cannabis, you need to "activate" it, this process is called Decarboxylation. Without this step, you will waste a lot of money!

So to begin, the first thing you must do when cooking with medical cannabis (or any cannabis!), including kief, bubble hash, or rosin oil/wax), is to Decarboxylate your cannabis.  This can be quite daunting the first time you do it, but just so long as you follow the simple instructions below, you should be fine.

There is a lot of information on the web about this process, I won't go into the science (today!), but in essence, you need to gently heat up your cannabis in order for it to be activated and used in food.

Just to get these FAQs out of the way:

Doesn't cooking the food with raw weed work?

No

Do I have to Decarboxylate?

YES!!!

What is  Decarboxylation and how do I do it?

I am glad you asked, sort of. Without doing this first, you will waste all of the product you want to use in cooking.

If you look around the internet, there are a lot of different opinions on the best way to "Decarb".

With a lot of trial and error, the methods that worked best for me are all based on the same principles.

You can either use your oven, double boil, or use a dedicated decarb machine (there are a couple out there, but the principle is the same - it's just a button click with convection heating, set times, and temps - a lot like a big dry herb vape, without the vaping!).

With the rise in medical cannabis use worldwide, manufacturers are cashing in on some amazing products for the kitchen (and elsewhere...!).

  1. Your first steps are to measure out your medical cannabis, you can use anything from a gram upwards
  2. Preheat your oven to 210C
  3. Get a Pyrex glass dish or jug, put in your medical cannabis, coarsely cut up (not ground), and just a thin layer across the bottom, and cover the container with foil, and place in a ceramic oven-proof dish about half full of cold water.
  4. Once the oven has reached the temperature put in your covered dish, close it, and wait 40 minutes
  5. Remove the dish from the oven, but keep it covered
  6. Once cooled to room temperature, you have activated the cannabis ready for cooking, infusing, making oil, just eating, or even making massage oil.

Of course, you could skip a lot of those steps, simply by buying a dedicated decarb machine, putting in the required amount of medical cannabis, putting on the lid, pushing the button waiting for the beep and you are done!

Now you can start your journey in the world of medical cannabis-infused food.

Eating cannabis is very different from smoking it, start small and take it slowly, it can take up to two hours before you feel the effects.

Rather than throwing away your vaped prescription, collect it in a pot and then you can make oil, add to your chocolate spread or add to the oil you made as above, you might even put some in a nighttime hot chocolate!
